My name is Mohamed Kanu, an Agribusiness Management graduate from Njala University and the Founder and Chairperson of Agro Businesses Empowerment and Environmental Development for Farmers and Entrepreneurs (ABEEDFE-SL). My journey into the world of agribusiness and community development has been fueled by a deep passion for empowering local farmers and entrepreneurs, especially in rural Sierra Leone. When I embarked on the MBS course, I was already driven by a vision to create lasting change in the agricultural sector. However, I recognized that to truly make an impact, I needed more than just passion—I needed advanced business acumen, leadership skills, and strategic insights. The MBS course provided exactly that.

Transformative Learning Experience: The MBS program challenged me to think critically and strategically. Courses in financial management, marketing, and organizational behavior were not just theoretical for me; they became tools that I immediately applied in leading ABEEDFE-SL. The skills I acquired helped me navigate the complexities of managing a diverse team and multiple projects within our divisional groups like Bomkiri Young Agricultural Farmers Association, ABEED Youth Farmers Association, and ABEED Petifu Farmers Association. One of the most significant impacts of the MBS course was in the area of strategic planning. I learned to design and implement sustainable business models that aligned with our mission of empowering local farmers. The knowledge gained has enabled me to guide our organization toward greater efficiency and effectiveness, ultimately expanding our reach and impact.

Leadership and Networking: Beyond the academic knowledge, the MBS course also offered a platform for networking with like-minded professionals and experts in the field. These connections have been invaluable in sharing ideas, learning from others’ experiences, and finding collaborative opportunities that have furthered the goals of ABEEDFE-SL. The course also refined my leadership approach, emphasizing the importance of ethical leadership and social responsibility. This has been crucial in ensuring that our work at ABEEDFE-SL not only drives economic growth but also fosters environmental sustainability and community well-being.

Impact on ABEEDFE-SL: Since completing the MBS course, ABEEDFE-SL has grown significantly. We’ve been able to launch new initiatives, secure funding, and build stronger partnerships with local and international organizations. The knowledge and skills I gained have empowered me to lead with confidence, knowing that our strategies are sound and our operations are impactful.In conclusion, the MBS course has been a pivotal experience in my professional journey. It has equipped me with the tools to not only envision change but to actively create it. As I continue to lead ABEEDFE-SL, I remain committed to using what I’ve learned to empower farmers and entrepreneurs across Sierra Leone, fostering a future where agriculture thrives, and communities prosper.

Money Management: The financial management sections of the course were incredibly beneficial. I learned how to create personal and business budgets, maintain an income and expense log, and prepare income statements. These tools have enabled me to keep track of my finances meticulously, ensuring that I am aware of my cash flow and profitability at all times. Community Involvement: The course emphasized the importance of giving back to the community. I organized a community service project, where I provided free reusable bags to local farmers’ markets. This initiative not only benefited the community but also helped build my brand’s reputation. Action Steps and Accountability: Regularly setting and reviewing commitments in areas such as business development, home quality of life, and money management kept me accountable. Reporting on my progress at the beginning of each unit ensured that I stayed on track and made continuous improvements. Profitability and Growth: By focusing on key areas such as marketing, cost management, and product diversification, I have been able to increase my sales and profitability. For example, I introduced new product lines and optimized my advertising strategies, which resulted in higher revenue and customer satisfaction. In summary, the MBS course has provided me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take my business to the next level. It has helped me turn my passion into a profitable venture and set me on a path towards sustainable growth. I am now better equipped to handle the challenges of entrepreneurship and am excited about the future of my reusable bags business.
